Metallica’s classic song ‘Nothing Else Matters’ is a masterpiece of accessible metal, and it was truly just a matter of time before somebody covered it on a Renaissance lute.
The lines among hard rock and classical music, especially that of the Baroque period, has been well drawn for years now.
Despite the fact that this is a particularly righteous pairing for followers of Metallica and… err… John Downland. Lutenist David Hernández Romero arranged the classic melodic metal for his instrument – a 15-string beauty.
And far from being a po faced re-imagining, it is a beautiful and stately job, making James Hetfield’s original sound like it really could have been written in the Renaissance era.
